Fire officials are advising residents of subdivisions to the east of the San Diego County city of Julian to evacuate in the face of a wildfire that has burned about 2,000 acres.
About 1,000 firefighters from Cal Fire, the U.S. Forest Service and local fire agencies across the county are battling the blaze, which is about 5% contained, according to Cal Fire spokesman Daniel Berlant.
The evacuation notice, which applies to residents of the area known as Julian Proper, is advisory, not mandatory, Berland said.
The fire started Saturday afternoon and burned through the night. Winds are now pushing it to the east, toward Julian.
Highway 78 is closed between Wynola Road and Scissors Crossing because of the blaze.
